A Festival of Lights in Waterloo Park

About Wonders of Winter

In 1994, Bill Weiler, a creative citizen of Waterloo asked for a loan from the City of Waterloo to install the first underground electrical service in Waterloo Park to power the first 5000 lights in imaginative displays.

The loan has since been repaid and now a number of local service clubs and retired electrical workers have taken on the volunteer task of getting sponsors, designing displays, repairing old displays, building and maintaining the underground services, turning the lights on and off every night and generally maintaining all the lights displays throughout  the festival of lights. There are now over 100 colourful displays with over 100,000 lights.

Sponsorship from over 30 local businesses plus in-kind donations from many others covers some of the expenses and then personal donations on-line here or cash donations at the Trolley Rides, or at the Barn or at the Park Inn help to cover the remainder of the costs. Because of the generosity of our community, the Wonders of Winter is free.

The lights come on at 6:00pm Opening Night and from 5:30pm to 10:30pm every evening through the month of December. They are then turned off for the season on New Year’s Day. Do join us for the Candle Light Event on Opening Night beginning at 5:30 pm.

Please enjoy the magic of the festival lights in Waterloo Park!
